Shrines of Italy

DAY 1

Monday, 18thSeptember From Naples. Upon arrival we will be met by our Tour Escort and have lunch in a nearby hotel. Afterwards we will transfer to the Shrine of St. Philomena where we will celebrate the opening Mass of our pilgrimage and receive a blessing with the relic of the saint. St. Philomena was martyred in the 4th century when she was no more than 14 years old. Her remains were discovered in the Catacombs of St. Priscilla in Rome and brought to the town of Mugnano del Cardinale. Many miracles were reported and pilgrims still visit the shrine today. We will continue onto Benevento where we will stay in the Grand Hotel Italiano for one night on a half board basis.

DAY 2

Tuesday, 19th September This morning we will celebrate Mass in the cathedral in Benevento where Padre Pio was ordained on the 10th of August 1910. Afterwards we will visit Piana Romana where we will see the tree beneath which Padre Pio received the invisible stigmata. We will transfer to Pietrelcina, birthplace of Padre Pio and have free time for lunch. In the afternoon we will have a walking tour of the picturesque town which will include a visit to the Forgione family home where baby Francesco was born and the Church of SantAnna where he was baptized. After time at leisure we will continue onto San Giovanni Rotondo where we will stay in the Hotel Colonne for the following three nights.

DAY 3

Wednesday, 20th September This morning we will celebrate Mass and afterwards have a tour of the hospital, Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza, considered to have been Padre Pios greatest creation. We will visit the English Office where we will learn of the incredible life of St. Pio and have a blessing with the glove and crucifix of the humble friar. After lunch we will have a walking tour of the sanctuary. We will visit the old tomb where the remains of Padre Pio rested for almost forty years before continuing onto the capuchin friary where we will see the cell where Padre Pio lived and died. Our tour will end with a visit to the Church of St. Pio of Pietrelcina where we will have time for private prayer and reflection before the mortal remains of the saint. We will return to our hotel for our evening meal.

DAY 4

Thursday, 21st September In the morning we will travel to Monte Sant Angelo, home to the oldest shrine in Western Europe dedicated to the Archangel Michael. We will celebrate Mass at the sacred cave and afterwards have free time for sightseeing before returning to San Giovanni Rotondo. Upon our return to San Giovanni Rotondo we will visit the cemetery where the parents of Padre Pio, Mary Pyle and Fr. Alessio are buried. After lunch we will participate in the Way of the Cross and have the remainder of the afternoon at leisure for personal sightseeing before returning to our hotel for our evening meal.

DAY 5

Friday, 22nd September After breakfast we will transfer to Naples airport.
