Shrines of Italy

Day 1

From Bari. Upon arrival in Bari we will be met by our Tour Escort and transfer to the Hotel Colonne in San Giovanni Rotondo. We will have our evening meal on arrival and afterwards check into our rooms.

Day 2

We will celebrate the opening Mass of our pilgrimage in the ancient church where St. Pio celebrated Mass. We will visit the English Office where we will hear about the incredible life of St. Pio and receive a blessing with the glove and crucifix of the humble friar. We will return to our hotel for lunch. In the afternoon we will have a walking tour of the sanctuary. We will visit the old tomb where the remains of Padre Pio rested for almost forty years before continuing onto the capuchin friary where we will see the cell where Padre Pio lived and died. Our tour will end with a visit to the Church of St. Pio of Pietrelcina where we will have time for private prayer and reflection before the mortal remains of the saint. We will return to our hotel for our evening meal.

Day 3

After breakfast we will visit the nearby town of San Marco in Lamis and have free time to browse the local markets. Afterwards we will visit St. Matthews monastery where we will have a blessing with the relic of St. Matthew and holy oils before returning to our hotel for lunch. In the afternoon we will travel to Monte Sant Angelo, home to the oldest shrine in Western Europe dedicated to the Archangel Michael. We will celebrate Mass at the sacred cave and afterwards have free time for sightseeing before returning to San Giovanni Rotondo. Upon our return to San Giovanni Rotondo we will visit the cemetery where the parents of Padre Pio, Mary Pyle and Fr. Alessio are buried. After our evening meal we will have the opportunity to participate in the procession that takes place through the town as the people of San Giovanni Rotondo come together to celebrate the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi.

Day 4

This morning we will celebrate Mass and afterwards have a tour of the hospital, Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza, considered to have been Padre Pios greatest creation. We will participate in the Way of the Cross and afterwards return to our hotel for lunch. In the afternoon we will have the opportunity to visit the historical centre of San Giovanni Rotondo. We will have time to stroll through the cobbled streets, experience the hospitality of the locals and learn more of the history of the town, loved so much by Padre Pio. We will return to our hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 5

After breakfast we will travel from San Giovanni Rotondo to Pietrelcina, the birthplace of Padre Pio. We will celebrate Mass in the Church of the Holy Family and afterwards visit the museum. We will take a walking tour of the town which will include a visit to the home of Padre Pios family and the Church of Sant Anna where Padre Pio was baptised. After free time for lunch we will visit Piana Romana and see the tree beneath which Padre Pio received the invisible Stigmata. In the afternoon we will travel to Benevento and visit the cathedral where Padre Pio was ordained on the 10th of August 1910. We will have time at leisure in Benevento before checking into the Grand Hotel Italiano where we will stay for one night on a half board basis.

Day 6

After breakfast we will transfer to Naples airport.
