Shrines of Italy

DAY 1 From Bari. Upon arrival in Bari we will be met by our Tour Escort and transfer to the Hotel Gaggiano in San Giovanni Rotondo. We will have our evening meal on arrival and afterwards check into our rooms. DAY 2 We will celebrate the opening Mass of our pilgrimage in the ancient church where St. Pio celebrated Mass. We will visit the English Office where we will hear about the incredible life of St. Pio and receive a blessing with the glove and crucifix of the humble friar. We will return to our hotel for lunch. In the afternoon we will have a walking tour of the sanctuary. We will visit the old tomb where the remains of Padre Pio rested for almost forty years before continuing onto the capuchin friary where we will see the cell where Padre Pio lived and died. Our tour will end with a visit to the Church of St. Pio of Pietrelcina where we will have time for private prayer and reflection before the mortal remains of the saint. We will return to our hotel for our evening meal. DAY 3 This morning we will travel the short distance to the town of San Marco in Lamis where we will have time to browse the local markets. Afterwards we will visit St. Matthews monastery where we will have a blessing with the relic of St. Matthew and holy oils. After lunch we will travel to Monte Sant Angelo, home to the oldest shrine in Western Europe dedicated to the Archangel Michael. We will celebrate Mass at the sacred cave and afterwards have free time for sightseeing before returning to San Giovanni Rotondo. In San Giovanni Rotondo we will visit the cemetery where the parents of Padre Pio, Fr. Alessio and Fr. Ermelindo are buried. We will return to our hotel for our evening meal. DAY 4 This morning we will celebrate Mass and afterwards have a tour of the hospital, Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza, considered to have been Padre Pios greatest creation. After lunch we will participate in the Way of the Cross and have the remainder of the afternoon at leisure. DAY 5 This morning we will celebrate Mass in the old tomb where the mortal remains of St. Pio rested for over forty years. Afterwards we will visit the house of Mary Pyle. LAmericana as she was fondly known by the locals gave up her wealthy lifestyle and came to San Giovanni Rotondo. She built a house and welcomed the many pilgrims who had come to San Giovanni Rotondo to meet with Padre Pio. We will return to our hotel for lunch and have the afternoon at leisure for private prayer and reflection. DAY 6 After breakfast we will depart San Giovanni Rotondo with packed lunch and travel to Materdomini where we will celebrate Mass at the Shrine of St. Gerard Majella, patron saint of expectant mothers and babies. After our lunch we will continue onto the Shrine of St. Philomena. St. Philomena was martyred in the 4th century when she was no more than 14 years old. Her remains were discovered in the Catacombs of St. Priscilla in Rome and brought to Mugnano. Many miracles were reported and pilgrims still visit the shrine today. We will have time for prayer at the altar of St. Philomena and receive a blessing with the relic of the Saint. Afterwards we will transfer to the Grand Hotel Italiano where we will stay for two nights on a half board basis. DAY 7 This morning we will celebrate Mass in the Church of the Holy Family and afterwards visit the museum. After free time for lunch we will visit Piana Romana and see the tree beneath which Padre Pio received the invisible Stigmata. In the afternoon we will travel to the capuchin friary in Morcone where Padre Pio entered to begin his novitiate on the 3rd of January 1903.
