From Bari. Upon arrival we will be met by our tour escort and transfer to the Hotel Colonne in San Giovanni Rotondo where we will stay for three nights on a full board basis. After lunch we will celebrate the opening Mass of our pilgrimage in the ancient Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie. We will visit the English Office where we will hear about the incredible life of St. Pio and receive a blessing with the glove and crucifix of the saint. We will return to our hotel for dinner. This evening we will have the opportunity to attend the Vigil ceremony taking place at the sanctuary as we celebrate the life of St. Pio of Pietrelcina.
This morning we will celebrate Mass and afterwards have a tour of the hospital, Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza, a haven of relief from suffering which was opened in 1956 and is considered Padre Pios greatest creation. We will return to our hotel for lunch. In the afternoon we will have a guided tour of the sanctuary. We will visit the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie where Padre Pio celebrated his last Mass on the 22nd of September 1968 and visit the capuchin friary where Padre Pio lived and died. Our tour will finish at the crypt in the Church of St. Pio of Pietrelcina where we will have time for private prayer before the remains of the saint. After our evening meal there will be a procession through the town as the local people celebrate the life of the humble friar.
This morning we will visit the town of Monte SantAngelo, home to the oldest shrine in Western Europe dedicated to the Archangel Michael. We will celebrate Mass and afterwards have free time for personal sightseeing. After lunch we will visit St. Matthews monastery where we will have a blessing with the relic of St. Matthew and holy oils. As we return to San Giovanni Rotondo we will visit the cemetery where the parents of Padre Pio and Mary Pyle are buried. We will return to our hotel for dinner and overnight.
After breakfast we will partake in the Way of the Cross and afterwards have the morning at leisure in San Giovanni Rotondo. In the afternoon we will travel to Bari. We will celebrate Mass in the 12th century Basilica of San Nicola which houses relics of the saint believed to have been stolen from Turkey in 1087 by local fishermen. St Nicholas' remains, which are said to emanate a miraculous manna liquid with powers, are ensconced in the beautiful vaulted crypt. We will have a tour of the basilica and afterwards transfer to Bari airport.
