Shrines of Italy

Day 1

From Rome Ciampino. Upon arrival we will be met by our Tour Escort and transfer to the Hotel Frate Sole in Assisi where we will stay for two nights. Refreshments on arrival.

Day 2

This morning we will celebrate Mass in the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli. We will visit the chapel of the Porziuncola chapel of St. Francis first community, the chapel of the Transito where St. Francis died and the Rose Garden. We will transfer to upper Assisi and have free time for lunch. In the afternoon we will have a walking tour of this medieval town visiting the Basilica of St. Francis where we will have time to admire the impressive works of Cimabue and Giotto depicting important scenes from the life of St. Francis. We will visit the Basilica of St. Clare, founder of the Order of Poor Clares and the Chiesa Nuova, built over the home of the Bernardone family. We will have time at leisure before returning to our hotel for dinner. After dinner we will have the opportunity to attend the candlelight procession that takes place at the nearby Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli.

Day 3

This morning we will depart Assisi to Loreto. We will celebrate Mass in the Basilica of the Holy House of Loreto. Tradition recounts that the Holy House of Loreto is the same walled chamber of Our Lady that existed in Nazareth where Mary was born, brought up, received the Annunciation and lived during the childhood of Jesus and after his ascension was converted into a church by the apostles. In the afternoon we will visit Lanciano, site of the first Eucharistic Miracle of the Catholic Church where we will have time for private prayer and reflection. We will continue onto San Giovanni Rotondo where we will stay in the Hotel Colonne for the following four nights.

Day 4

We will celebrate morning Mass in the ancient Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie. Afterwards we will visit the English Office where we will hear about the incredible life of St. Pio and receive a blessing with the glove and crucifix of the saint. We will return to our hotel for lunch. In the afternoon we will have a guided tour of the sanctuary. We will visit the capuchin friary where Padre Pio lived and died and see the crucifix before which Padre Pio received the Stigmata. We will complete our tour with a visit to the crypt in the Church of St. Pio of Pietrelcina where we will have time for prayer before the mortal remains of the humble friar. We will return to the hotel for our evening meal.

Day 5

This morning we will celebrate Mass in the Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza, a haven of relief from suffering and afterwards have a tour of the hospital which is considered Padre Pios greatest creation. In the afternoon we will participate in the Stations of the Cross before returning to our hotel for our evening meal.

Day 6

After breakfast we will travel to the nearby town of San Marco in Lamis where we will browse the local markets. Afterwards we will visit St. Matthews monastery where we will receive a blessing with the relic of St. Matthew and the holy oil. After lunch we will travel to the town of Monte SantAngelo, home to the oldest shrine in Western Europe dedicated to the Archangel Michael. We will celebrate Mass at the sacred cave and afterwards have some time at leisure before returning to our hotel for our evening meal.

Day 7

This morning we will depart San Giovanni Rotondo and travel to Pietrelcina, birthplace of St. Pio. We will celebrate Mass at the Church of SantAnna and afterwards take a walking tour of the quaint town visiting the Forgione family home where Padre Pio was born and the parish church where he celebrated his first Mass. After free time for lunch we will transfer to nearby Piana Romana where we will visit the chapel dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi and see the tree beneath which Padre Pio received the invisible stigmata We will continue onto Benevento where we will stay in the Grand Hotel Italiano for one night on a half board basis.

Day 8

This morning we will celebrate Mass before transferring to Naples airport.
