Shrines of Italy

DAY 1

From Naples. Upon arrival in Naples we will be met by our Tour Escort and transfer to the Grand Hotel Italiano where we will stay for one night on a full board basis. After lunch we will transfer to Pietrelcina, the birthplace of Padre Pio. We will celebrate Mass in the Church of the Holy Family and afterwards visit the museum. We will take a walking tour of the town which will include a visit to the home of Padre Pios family and the Church of Sant Anna where Padre Pio was baptised. We will visit Piana Romana and see the tree beneath which Padre Pio received the invisible Stigmata. On our return to Benevento we will visit the cathedral where Padre Pio was ordained on the 10th of August 1910. We will return to our hotel for dinner and overnight.

DAY 2

This morning we will depart Benevento to Materdomini where we will celebrate Mass at the Shrine of St. Gerard Majella, patron saint for expectant mothers and unborn children. After Mass we will have time for private prayer. After free time for lunch we will transfer to San Giovanni Rotondo where we will stay for the following five nights. After dinner we will have the opportunity to participate in the Marian Torchlight procession which takes place in the sanctuary of Our Lady of Grace.

DAY 3

In the morning we will celebrate Mass in the ancient church where St. Pio celebrated Mass. We will visit the English Office where we will hear about the incredible life of St. Pio and receive a blessing with the glove and crucifix of the humble friar. We will return to our hotel for lunch. In the afternoon we will have a walking tour of the sanctuary. We will visit the old tomb where the remains of Padre Pio rested for almost forty years before continuing onto the capuchin friary where we will see the cell where Padre Pio lived and died. Our tour will end with a visit to the Church of St. Pio of Pietrelcina where we will have time for private prayer and reflection before the mortal remains of the saint. We will return to our hotel for our evening meal.

DAY 4

This morning we will celebrate Mass and afterwards have a tour of the hospital, Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza, considered to have been Padre Pios greatest creation. In the afternoon we will participate in the Way of the Cross before returning to our hotel for dinner and overnight.

DAY 5

After breakfast we will visit St. Matthews monastery where we will have a blessing with the relic of St. Matthew and holy oils. We will continue onto the nearby Convent of Stignano. According to legend, in 1216 St. Francis of Assisi passed through the valley of Stignano on his way to the Grotto of St. Michael the Archangel. Amazed by it beauty, he stopped and blessed the fruits of this area. We will visit the church which dates back to 1515 and is today in the care of the Franciscan Order. As we return to San Giovanni Rotondo we will visit the cemetery where the parents of Padre Pio, Mary Pyle and Fr. Alessio are buried. In the afternoon we will travel to Monte Sant Angelo, home to the oldest shrine in Western Europe dedicated to the Archangel Michael. We will celebrate Mass at the sacred cave and afterwards have time at leisure for sightseeing before returning to our hotel for dinner and overnight.

DAY 6

Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. This morning we will visit the historical centre of San Giovanni Rotondo and celebrate Mass. Afterwards we will have time to stroll through the cobbled streets, experience the hospitality of the locals and learn more of the history of the town, loved so much by Padre Pio. We will return to our hotel for lunch. In the afternoon we will visit the house of Mary Pyle. LAmericana, as she was popularly known by the locals of San Giovanni Rotondo, gave up her wealthy lifestyle to dedicate her life to Padre Pio. She built a house close to the friary and welcomed into her home the many pilgrims coming from Italy and abroad to meet Padre Pio. After our evening meal we will have the opportunity to participate in the procession that takes place through the town as the people of San Giovanni Rotondo come together to celebrate the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi.

DAY 7

After breakfast we will depart San Giovanni Rotondo and travel to the Shrine of St. Philomena. St. Philomena was martyred in the 4th century when she was no more than 14 years old. Her remains were discovered in the Catacombs of St. Priscilla in Rome and brought to Mugnano. Many miracles were reported and pilgrims still visit the shrine today. We will continue onto Pompeii and check into the Hotel Palma where we will stay for one night on a half board basis. After free time for lunch we will visit the Basilica of the Virgin of the Holy Rosary of Pompeii, once visited by the young Francesco Forgione. We will celebrate Mass and afterwards venerate the painting of Our Lady of the Rosary. We will have time for personal sightseeing in the town of Pompeii and before returning to our hotel for dinner and overnight.
