Saints and Scholars of Ireland

Day 1 Thursday July 14th

Check-in at New York (JFK airport) for overnight flight to Dublin.

Day 2 Friday July 15th

9.30am: Arrive in Dublin, hop on the waiting bus, and ride through the scenic countryside to Athlone. Deposit luggage and have a full Irish breakfast at Hodson Bay Hotel, Athlone. Cruise down the Shannon to the historic site of Clonmacnoise (founded by Saint Ciaran in the 6th Century!). Tour and Holy Mass; then onto historic Terryglass (housed a famous school in the 6th Century) for a late lunch and visit to the Holy Wells. Afternoon check-in and dinner at the hotel. Breakfast, evening meal

Day 3 Saturday July 16th

Enjoy a morning visit to the Rock of Cashel, Co. Tipperary, one of Irelands most spectacular archaeological sites and seat of the High Kings of Munster. Lunch in Cashel; drive through Irelands heartland, and attend Vespers (Evening Prayer) with the community at St. Marys in Cork, a magnificent church in the heart of the city. Check in to the Imperial Hotel, in Cork City for 2 nights. Dinner at the hotel tonight with a speaker who will give unique insight into the state of the Faith in Ireland. Breakfast, evening meal

Day 4 Sunday July 17th

Following breakfast, Sunday Mass at St. Marys in Cork. At lunch, enjoy a performance from the students of Mater Dei Academy and visit Irelands only Catholic classical school. In the afternoon we will visit Cobh, the Titanics last port of call, and the final view of Ireland for millions of emigrants. Also see spectacular St. Colmans Cathedral. Dinner at the hotel where we will be joined by the board from the Mater Dei Academy. Evening entertainment. Breakfast, evening meal

Day 5 Monday July 18th

Following breakfast, we head north. We will stop at the vibrant Benedictine monastery of Glenstal Abbey. Holy Mass will be at a Penal Mass Rock (weather permitting). Lunch and ramble in Limerick City. From there, we travel to Galway and check in at the Jurys Inn in Galway. Leisurely dinner at the hotel with an invited speaker and entertainment. Breakfast, evening meal

Day 6 Tuesday July 19th

Following breakfast, take a boat to the Aran Islands (weather permitting!), a World Heritage Site and home of one of Irelands earliest monastic settlements. Holy Mass and lunch on the island of Inis Mr. Rain plan: explore the bustling city of Galway and its world-class shopping district before heading to the Knock House Hotel. Enjoy dinner in the hotel and an invited speaker. Breakfast, evening meal

Day 7 Wednesday July 20th

Mass is at 9 am at the International Eucharistic and Marian Shrine where Our Lady appeared in 1879. After breakfast, take a self-guided or guided walking tour of Knock and the Apparition chapel. Afterwards, travel through the beautiful rural countryside of Mayo to the historic Ballintubber Abbey, site of St. Patricks Well. Travel onto Westport and Irelands holy mountain: Croagh Patrick with magnificent views across Clew Bay. Return to Knock for dinner and a speaker you wont be able to hear anywhere else! Breakfast, evening meal

Day 8 Thursday July 21st

Depart following a hearty breakfast from Knock, breaking for lunch in Mullingar en route to Royal Meath, and Tara, home of Irelands High Kings of old. Even older is the neolithic Newgrange passage tomb! Head for Dublin in the afternoon, and check in at the luxurious Clayton Hotel. Holy Mass in the magnificent Dominican St. Saviours Church in Dublin followed by dinner and entertainment. Breakfast, evening meal

Day 9 Friday July 22nd

Begin the day with breakfast and a walking tour of central Dublin to visit the magnificent Chester Beatty Museum and Library at Trinity College "one of the best in Europe" according to Lonely Planet and see the incomparable Book of Kells. End the day with a tour of Glasnevin Cemetery, Irelands first (legal) Catholic cemetery, where rest Daniel OConnell, Kevin Barry, Michael Collins, amon de Valera and more great patriots. End with a final evening of fun at the Merry Ploughboy with a traditional evening meal and a night of entertainment. Breakfast, evening meal Day 10 Saturday July 23rd A hearty Irish breakfast begins the day. Mid-morning board the bus for the short ride to Dublin Airport, from whence the flight home. Sln abhaile! Safe home!
