DAY 1 Depart USA
Check in at Boston airport for overnight transatlantic flight to Dublin, Ireland.
DAY 2 Arrive Italy
Morning arrival to Dublin airport. On arrival, collect your luggage and proceed to terminal 1 for your Ryanair flight to Naples. At Naples airport we will be greeted by our Marian Pilgrimages representative and driver who will remain with us for the duration of our pilgrimage. As we drive to our hotel we will hear of the traditions of this part of Italy and of our plans for the coming days. After checking into our rooms, we will have time to relax before dinner.
DAY 3 Pietrelcina
After breakfast, we will check out of our hotel and drive to the town of Pietrelcina, birthplace of Padre Pio. Our guide will recount to us episodes from the early years of Francesco Forgione (future Padre Pio) and his dream of becoming a monk with a beard.
Upon arrival in the quaint town, we will celebrate Mass in the Church of the Holy Family and afterwards visit the museum which has carefully preserved items dating back to Padre Pios time in his native town.
Our guided tour of the town will take us to the Forgione family home where Francesco was born and the Church of SantAnna where he was baptised. After lunch in a local restaurant, we will visit nearby Piana Romana and have time for prayer before the tree before which Padre Pio received the first signs of the stigmata. The picturesque countryside will make for an enjoyable drive to San Giovanni Rotondo, home to Padre Pio for over fifty years.
After checking into the four-star Hotel Parco delle Rose we will have dinner and afterwards the opportunity to join fellow pilgrims at the sanctuary for the Marian Torchlight Procession.
DAY 4 Capuchin friary, Church of St. Pio of Pietrelcina & Way of the Cross
After morning Mass, we will begin to walk in the footsteps of Padre Pio during his years in San Giovanni Rotondo. Our guide will take us to the ancient Church of Our Lady of Grace where Padre Pio celebrated Mass and heard confessions before continuing onto the capuchin friary, where we will learn more about the poor friar who prays as Padre Pio often described himself. Our morning will conclude in the Church of St. Pio of Pietrelcina where there will be time for private prayer before the remains of the great saint of our time.
Walking the Way of the Cross in the afternoon will allow us as Christians, to pause and enter reflectively into those last moments of Jesus's journey of love.
DAY 5 English Office & Shrine of St. Michael the Archangel
The English Office was founded by Fr. Alessio Parente to welcome English-speaking pilgrims arriving in San Giovanni Rotondo. This morning we will visit the English Office and learn more of the life of Padre Pio before receiving a blessing with the glove and crucifix used by the humble friar.
Padre Pio had a great devotion to St. Michael the Archangel and travelled on pilgrimage to the shrine in Monte SantAngelo. During our afternoon drive to the oldest shrine in Western Europe dedicated to the Archangel Mi-chael, we will hear of the apparitions of the Archangel Michael and have the privilege of celebrating Mass in the sacred cave.
DAY 6 Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza
In 1956 Padre Pio presented to the world his greatest gift, Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza which today is now one of the most important hospitals in Europe. An important part in the story of Padre Pio, after morning Mass we will visit to the hospital and learn of the history behind what is regarded as Padre Pios greatest creation, and of the wonderful work that continues to this day. We will have lunch and enjoy an afternoon at leisure with the opportunity to return to the crypt of St. Pio for private prayer.
DAY 7 Return home
After breakfast we will check out of our hotel and drive the short distance to Naples airport for our return flight to Dublin. On arrival in Dublin, collect your luggage and proceed to terminal 2 for your Aer Lingus flight to Boston.
Please note as San Giovanni Rotondo is a hill-top town with a number of inclines which need to be negotiated to arrive at the sanctuary, it is not suitable for wheelchair users. As a result, there is no official local facility for hire of wheelchairs or mobile aids.
