Lourdes and Fatima Pilgrimages Lourdes:
Located in southwestern France, is the most visited pilgrimage site in the Christian world. It was here on the 11th of February 1858, Bernadette Soubirous witnessed a beautiful apparition in this small village in France. While gathering wood by the Grotto, Bernadette first saw a vision of Our Lady surrounded by brilliant light. Too frightened to approach Her, Bernadette prayed the Rosary while Our Lady looked on in quiet approval. Our Lady then disappeared. It was not until Her third visit to the Grotto that She spoke. She asked Bernadette to come to the Grotto for fifteen days. Bernadette did as requested and listened to the messages Our Lady delivered from God. In these messages He asks His children to pray for sinners and repent. During the apparitions Our Lady gave Bernadette a mission; She requested that Bernadette tell the priests to build a chapel and come in procession to Lourdes. During the 9th apparition, the discovery of the miraculous spring in the Grotto was made by Bernadette. Its waters are said to have healing powers and many miraculous healings to this day are attributed to it. Bernadette was scrutinised and questioned by hundreds of people on a daily basis. On the feast of the Annunciation, Our Lady declared to Bernadette "I am the Immaculate Conception." It was then that people ceased accusing Bernadette of lies. The apparitions lasted until July 1858.
Fatima:
Fatima saw the beginning of apparitions to Francisco, Jacinta and Lucia in 1917. The Blessed Virgin appeared on the 13th day of every month between May and October at Cova de Iria. She delivered messages from God, the overriding message was for all mankind to return to God and to make reparation for his sins. She stressed the importance of praying the Rosary in each of Her apparitions. The people of Fatima, local authorities and even some of their families did not believe that such apparitions were taking place. On the 13th August, on their way to Cova de Iria, the children were captured by the local authorities and held in jail. The local authorities demanded that they reveal the secrets. However, even though they were interrogated and threatened with death, the children refused to disclose any information. In October the miracle of the sun took place. As Our Lady was about to leave, the sun began whirling in the sky and seemed to plunge towards the ground. Thousands of spectators, who were present during the apparition, suddenly became terrified and fell to their knees in prayer. It was reported that numerous healings took place during this time. Today Fatima is a worldwide place of pilgrimage, thousands of people flock here every year to pray to Our Lady and Our Lord.
Lourdes and Fatima Programme
- During our time in Lourdes we will visit the Grotto of Massabielle and take in a walking tour to the Boly Mill, where Bernadette was born, and to the Cachot, an abandoned prison where Bernadette’s family lived.
- Take part in the torchlight processions each evening. As early as 18th February 1858, the day of the third Apparition, one of the two people accompanying Bernadette had carried a candle. After this, Bernadette herself always came with a candle. The iconic Lourdes Torchlight Procession, knownthroughout the world, was introduced in Lourdes in 1863 by Father Marie-Antoine, a Capuchin also known as the Saint of Toulouse. The Marian Procession is the most popular celebration in Lourdes. During the Procession, and depending on the day, the pilgrims recite the Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful or Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary. At the beginning of each decade, a few words in several languages give direction to the prayer so that it does not become a monotonous repetition. The Ave Maria and other hymns can be heard in many languages. In the serenity of the evening, each pilgrim carries his or her own personal intentions as the prayer gathers the assembly of all nations, people and languages with the Virgin Mary, like the disciples in the Cenacle after the Ascension of Christ. The procession always takes place regardless of the weather.
- Visit the Baths of Lourdes, a focal point of the sanctuary, filled with the”healing” spring water of Lourdes. Immerse yourself in the baths where hundreds of miraculous healing’s have taken place. “Go and drink at the spring and wash yourself there! these words of the Virgin Mary to Bernadette during one of the Apparitions inspired the creation of the Baths near the Grotto in which the pilgrims are immersed.
- Visit also the Low Stations of the Cross for some free time for reflection and prayer.
- Whilst in Fatima we celebrate Mass in the Capelinha – Apparition site at Cova da Iria and every evening we have an opportunity to take part in the evening torchlight processions.
- On our orientation tour of the Sanctuary we see the Rosary Basilica with the tombs of Francisco, Jacinta and Lucia, the Berlin Wall, the Old Holmoak, Monument to the Sacred Heart, the Fountain, Basilica of the Holy Trinity, and the Chapel of Adoration.
- We will walk the Hungarian Way of the Cross, through the Olive and Oak trees, to Valinhos (where Our Lady appeared on 19th August 1917) to the Calvary. Visit Loca do Anjo where the Angel of Peace appeared to the Children. Continue to Aljustrel and visit the homes of the Little Shepherds and see the Well in Lucia’s garden where they also had a vision.
- Take in also a tour to Santarem and visit the Church of St Stephen – site of a Eucharistic Miracle over 700 years ago.
